Former Victorian Premiers Dick Hamer and John Cain will convene a Constitutional Convention at Parliament House in Melbourne on 30 November.

Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Tony Hanning will represent Latrobe City at the Constitutional Convention and has asked for input from the Latrobe community.

"The purpose of the Constitutional Convention is to discuss the present state of Victoria’s constitution and the need for constitutional reform," Cr Hanning said.

"At present, for example, the State Government is able to change the State’s constitution without going to the voters," Cr Hanning explained.

"Also, under the current Constitution, local government is not recognised as an autonomous or separate level of government. Local governments are accountable to both the State Government and their local electorates," Councillor Hanning added.

All of these issues will be discussed at the Constitutional Convention. Representatives of all Victorian Councils, and the State Government will be attending the Convention.

"I invite the Latrobe community to forward any comments on the Victorian Constitution to Latrobe City Council over the next two weeks, so that I can represent the community’s views at the Convention," Cr Hanning said.

If you would like to provide input, please write to the Chief Executive Officer, Latrobe City Council, PO Box 345, Traralgon, 3844, by Thursday 23 November 2000; or telephone 1300 367 700 for further details.
