Traralgon Creek Suspension Bridge To Be Dismantled

The suspension pedestrian bridge over Traralgon Creek joining Agnes Brereton and Harold Preston Reserves is to be dismantled within days

By Latrobe City - 3rd November 2008 - Back to News

Latrobe City’s general manager built and natural environment sustainability, Peter Quigley, said the bridge is no longer able to be maintained due to structural faults.

"Additionally, there have been vandalism and unauthorised access issues since it was closed," Mr Quigley said.

The suspension bridge was closed when an upper cross-member supporting the suspension cables was identified as failing, putting pressure on the end of one of the eastern supports and leading to some splitting of the support post.

Mr Quigley said there are several options available for the bridge and these options are currently being evaluated.

"Latrobe City Council will be engaging with the community in the near future over proposals and designs for a replacement bridge," he said.

"Following consultation, funding allocations for a replacement will be considered by council as part of the 2009/2010 budget process," Mr Quigley added.

Pedestrians are requested to detour via the Franklin Street Bridge until a new structure is commissioned.
