Chill Island Traffic

On Saturday January 27, Churchill Island will host the inaugural ‘Chill Island’ festival from 2pm to 10pm.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 19th January 2007 - Back to News

There has been some community concern regarding traffic to and from the event, but Council’s Special Events Coordinator, Frank Angarane says there has been extensive work done to minimise the impact.

"Visitor numbers to this family music festival have been limited to 3,500 to ensure a smooth running traffic flow.

"This is equivalent to a big Sunday of the Churchill Island Working Horse Festival, which is held at Easter.

"However, residents should try to avoid the Churchill Island entry area on the Phillip Island Tourist Road between 11am and 2pm and 8pm and 10pm on the event day, when heavy traffic is expected."

Mr Angarane said festival organisers had done a significant amount of planning in conjunction with VicRoads, Council and Police.

"Police will control the traffic entry and exit phases for the festival.

"Signs have been erected to advise people of the expected peak time of 12-2pm.

"The right-hand turn lane will also be extended during the entry time, so more cars can line-up to turn into the festival.

"An electric sign board will also be in place to notify festival goers to keep right on entry," Mr Angarane continued.

"The festival organisers have an extensive operation to process patrons quickly to minimise queuing.

"All exiting traffic must turn left. They will have to use the Newhaven roundabout to head back into Cowes if they wish."

Mr Angarane said he was confident the festival would run smoothly.

"Any issues that do arise will of course be reviewed and planned for at any future events."
