Clean Up Australia founder and Chairman Mr Ian Kiernan AO is encouraging schools, businesses, community groups and individuals to do their bit towards protecting our special local environments. "In the lead up to the main event on Sunday 4 March, there is the ‘Business Clean Up Day’ on Tuesday, 28 February and ‘Schools Clean Up Day’ on Friday 2 March. "The ‘Clean Up Kit’ for each site takes around two weeks to arrive, so sign up your site by 14 February 2011 to make sure your Kit arrives in time! "We’re urging all Australians to take notice of clean up hotspots in your local area and let us know where they are - whether you can help out on the day or not," said Mr Kiernan. "Your parks, waterways, beaches, road sides or back alleys are all key areas and we are asking you to join the team by letting us know where these areas are. "Think of the places that are important to you and pull together your own team to join Team Clean Up, " said Mr Kiernan. In 2011 more than 565,000 volunteers at over 7,400 sites removed 16,464 tonnes of rubbish across Australia and the Clean Up Team has their sights set on increasing the number of site registrations in 2012. Bass Coast Shire Council’s Waste Services Manager, David Owen, said it’s important to sign up early to be involved.
"Register yourself or your club as volunteers online, or just turn up at a registered site on the Day with gloves, a hat, sturdy shoes, sunglasses and sunscreen. "Council will also collect bags of waste and recyclables from registered Clean Up sites. "The Shire has a proud history supporting Clean Up Australia Day, and it is the perfect opportunity for everyone to come together and help clean up our local parks and waterways. "It is also a time to think about how we can reduce the impact of waste on the environment, said Mr Owen. For more information about where where Bass Coast’s potential clean up sites are contact Bass Coast Shire Council’s Waste Services team on 1300 BCOAST (226 278). Registrations are now open to join Team Clean Up in 2012. To register go to: www.cleanupaustraliaday.org.au or call 1800 CUA DAY (1800 282 329).
