Northe Speaks In Parliament On A Million Steps For Sma Traralgon In Memory Of Taylin Mackay Member for Morwell Russell Northe yesterday recognised in Parliament the effort of Jason and Lee Mackay on the hosting of the fun run/walk "Million Steps for SMA in Memory of Taylin Mackay". By Russell Northe - 14th November 2013 - Back to News He said "I also wish to commend Jason and Lee Mackay and their families for their efforts in hosting the "Million Steps for SMA Traralgon in Memory of Taylin Mackay" last Sunday morning.
"Approximately 450 adults plus children participated in the fun run/walk raising around $25,000 which will assist in the fight against Spinal Muscular Atrophy.
"Also a big thank you to the many sponsors, supporters and volunteers who helped make the event a great success." Mr Northe said "Last year the memory of Taylin Mackay inspired the Latrobe Valley community to raise more than $25,000 for Spinal Muscular Atrophy through the Traralgon Million Steps fun run.
"This was the third annual Million Steps fun run for Spinal Muscular Atrophy in honour of Taylin Mackay," Mr Northe said.
"SMA is a genetically transferred degenerative motor neuron disease – the most sever of its kind – and has no cure.
"Spinal Muscular Atrophy is a rare inherited genetic disease that is characterised by a loss of nerve cells called motor neurons.
"The loss of motor neurons leads to the progressive muscle weakness and wasting. These muscles are necessary for crawling, walking, sitting, feeding, swallowing and breathing.
"SMA Australia advocates, provides proactive support, educates public and professionals and anyone touched by this disease. Provision of specialist equipment assists families that is not provided by hospitals "
