Emergency Flood Payments

The Federal Government has announced cash payments for people who have lost their homes or suffered serious injury as a result of the devastating Gippsland floods.

By Hon Peter McGauran - 2nd July 2007 - Back to News

Nationals Member for Gippsland Peter McGauran said the Government would pay $1000 per eligible adult and $400 per eligible child as a special one-off payment.

"Given the widespread property damage, the Prime Minister has agreed to offer cash payment for immediate assistance to people who have lost their homes," Mr McGauran said.

"The payments will be available to people who have suffered serious injury or lost their principal place of residence or had that residence rendered uninhabitable for a period of 48 hours as a direct result of the floods."

Mr McGauran said the payments would be over and above the support being provided by the Federal Government under the Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements.

Under these arrangements, the Federal Government provides the State Government with funding to assist with response and recovery.

"The Federal Government will provide funding to the State Government to assist with emergency accommodation, emergency repairs and replacement of pubic infrastructure," Mr McGauran said.

"The State Government can also request special community recovery packages to assist small businesses and primary producers and these packages are funded equally by the State and Federal Governments."

People who are entitled to the $1000 and $400 cash payments can apply to Centrelink on 180 2211.
