By Dept of Sustainabilty & Environment - 11th May 2011 - Back to News Almost 80 students from four local schools: Seaspray Primary School, Sale Secondary College, Gippsland Grammar and Sale Specialist School worked hard to plant about 1000 trees along the dunes on the Friday.
Working in teams, the students soon got into a solid and productive routine of planting and fertilising, then protecting the trees with snail pellets and guards.
DSE Project Manager, Bill Storer said he was pleased with the huge amount of help from the volunteer planters on both days.
"It’s been very productive and we’ve now got thousands of eucalypts, banksias and she-oaks planted along the dunes to help protect them for the future," he said.
"It was great to see the students working together so well, helping each other out and being proud of their achievements."
Valmai Todd and Garry Eastoe run the ‘Hands On Learning’ program at Sale Secondary College, which aims to empower young students to make positive decisions about their education and life.
Ms Todd said the planting day helped the year 7-10 students connect with their community and with other young people.
"Today has made them see that they can play a part in the bigger picture of Gippsland and make a difference to their own community and the environment," she said.
On Saturday, community members and representatives from the Seaspray Ratepayers, Seaspray Surf Life Saving Club, Foreshore Committee and Reserves Committee of Management planted more trees.
A local contractor will complete the plantings over the next few weeks.
