2003 Victorian Country Volleyball ChampionshipsABOUT 200 of country Victoria’s best volleyballers converged on Warrnambool for the 34th Victorian Country Volleyball Championships last weekend.
By Howard Williams - 11th June 2003 - Back to News ABOUT 200 of country Victoria’s best volleyballers converged on Warrnambool for the 34th Victorian Country Volleyball Championships last weekend.
Teams from across the state contested five divisions at Warrnambool’s new multi-million dollar Warrnambool Stadium.
Latrobe Valley Volleyball Association sent seven teams representing Latrobe Valley, Churchill & Morwell in a bid to claim country championships glory in each Division. Both Latrobe Valley teams are rebuilding and contested the tough Division one with the men playing off for bronze. Latrobe Valley player, Joanne Winwood, was named in the All-Star Six award for women.
The junior women’s division was won by Morwell in a marathon five-setter over Warrnambool: 25-21, 9-25, 25-16, 22-25, 15-7. Despite the small number of junior girls teams, the enthusiasm with which the girls played was infectious and many associations will be trying to field teams in 2004.
Morwell were again victorious in women’s division two, defeating Ballarat in another five-setter: 25-23, 14-25, 25-21, 20-25, 15-10. Warrnambool picked up the bronze medal in a five-set victory over Churchill: 15-25, 25-18, 25-16, 19-25, 16-14. Churchill men were also fourth in men’s division two.
