The Wonthaggi Visitor Information Centre has received a Certificate of Recognition from the Country Victorian Tourism Council (CVTC). The award recognises the work of the volunteers at the Centre.

"I can not thank the volunteers enough for their hard work, the Centre could not function to its current capacity without them, said Euan Wightman, Visitor Services Officer at Council.

"The Centre is normally the first port of call for visitors to Wonthaggi whether they are from Germany, Leongatha or any where else," explained Euan. "Our volunteers have a key role in welcoming visitors and advising them about activities, shops and services that are available in Bass Coast."

The Wonthaggi Visitor Information Centre has the largest number of volunteers in Gippsland and three new volunteers have recently been recruited in order to cope with the increasing number of visitors.

The Centre is experiencing unprecedented growth. Monthly visitor numbers in October 2001 are double October 2000. Annual visitor numbers this year are running at record levels and will almost double 1999 figures. The Centre is the second busiest in the Phillip Island and Prom Country region, with Newhaven the busiest.

According to long time volunteer Henry Williams, Wonthaggi is currently benefiting from the surge of popularity of surrounding seaside towns such as Cape Paterson, Inverloch and Kilcunda.

"The Centre has expanded the range of services we offer to keep up with exceptions from the increasing numbers of visitors," said Henry. "It is pleasing to receive acknowledgement from CVTC for our volunteer efforts."

The Wonthaggi Information Centre is fully accredited by the CVCT and is open 7 days a week, 363 days a year. However, this is only made possible with the support of the 18 volunteers at the Centre.
