Gippslanders to travel together on international dayBy Latrobe Shire Council - 25th November 2004 - Back to News Train travellers can enjoy a breakfast celebration at Traralgon Railway Station as part of Latrobe City’s participation in International Day of People with a disAbility on Friday 3 December. The theme is ‘Gippsland Travelling Together’ and the activities commence with breakfast treats from 6.30am.
V/Line staff on every train between Melbourne and Bairnsdale will distribute copies of a booklet titled ‘Gippslanders Travelling Together’, which lists accessible public transport that is available throughout Gippsland. Copies of the booklet will also be distributed on V/Line coaches, local bus and taxi services and at Mid Valley Shopping Centre from noon – 2pm, and Moore Street in Moe 4pm - 6pm.
Latrobe City’s Rural Access Project Officer, Bill Lawler, said that the booklet will also be available at Council Offices throughout Gippsland, the Department of Human Services, Centrelink, CRS Australia, medical centres, nursing homes, supported residential facilities, Neighbourhood Houses and other community organisations.
An accessible taxi and low-floor bus will be available between 10am and 11.30am at the Morwell Railway Station for the public to inspect and try out.
"Gippsland train and coach travellers will also be invited to take part in a Disability Awareness Quiz which aims to increase peoples’ knowledge and awareness of disability issues and to dispel some myths about disabilities," Mr Lawler said.
"It is hoped that the distribution of the booklet and the activities taking place on the day will increase the community’s knowledge of the availability of accessible public transport and encourage its use," Mr Lawler said.
"NICAN, the national organising body, have advised that the national theme for International Day of People with a disability in 2004 is ‘Nothing About Us Without Us’ which encourages the active involvement of people with disabilities in the planning of strategies and policies that affect their lives.
"Events will be held across Victoria during December to celebrate the annual International Day of people with a disAbility to promote an understanding of disability issues around lifestyle, employment and wellbeing.
"Involving all Victorians in the state calendar of events for International Day of People with a disAbility offers an opportunity to foster changes in attitudes towards people with disabilities and eliminate barriers to their full participation in all aspects of life," Mr Lawler added.
