Cultural Concert Reflects Commonwealth DiversityA special Queens Baton Relay Cultural Concert will feature in Kay Street Traralgon on Tuesday afternoon from 3pm – 6.30pm. Admission is free. By Latrobe City - 24th February 2006 - Back to News A special stage will be constructed in the median strip opposite the Traralgon outdoor pool, which will also feature the official welcome of the Queen’s Baton later in the afternoon.
The Queens Baton Relay Cultural Concert will feature the special performances of ten primary schools from across our municipality
Each school’s performance has been developed to reflect the flavour of one of the Commonwealth nations participating at this year’s Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games.
Latrobe City mayor, Cr Lisa Price, said hundreds of children have been polishing their performances for several months to provide some first class entertainment for the whole community.
"The program captures the diversity of the Commonwealth nations who will take part in the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games in mid-March. Enthusiastic, skilful and colourful performances have been put together by the schoolchildren to celebrate this diversity," Cr Price said.
"The ten schools participating in the celebration each adopted a Commonwealth nation on which to base their performance. These were selected at random through a draw, by the schools themselves at a ceremony last October.
"Each school researched their adopted nation and has created a performance based around that nation. Apart from the magnificent event their work will culminate in on Tuesday afternoon, the children have learned so much about the people from other lands which will enrich their lives," Cr Price said.
Churchill Primary School will base its performance on Scotland; Morwell Park Primary School – Guyana; Grey Street Primary School – Canada; Tobruk Street Primary School – Jamaica; KODE School – Malta; Newborough Primary School – Malaysia; Yallourn North – New Zealand; Crinigan Road Primary – India; Elizabeth Street Primary School – Nigeria; and Liddiard Road Primary School – Australia.
"Come along at 3pm Tuesday and support our wonderful schoolchildren as they share their special Commonwealth Games performances, and welcome the Queen’s Baton to Latrobe City when it arrives on stage during the Celebration Concert," Cr Price added.
