Osteoporosis is a condition in which the bones become fragile and brittle, leading to a higher risk of fractures than in normal bones.

"I am very happy to be supporting Osteoporosis Victoria during National Healthy Bones Week," said Cr Goodwin.

"We all need to understand that osteoporosis is a condition that can be easily prevented, yet one in two women and one in three men over 60 are likely to have a fracture because of osteoporosis.

"Bass Coast has a high proportion of older residents, so this is a particularly relevant message for our community."

Chief Executive of Osteoporosis Victoria, Natalie Savin, said that osteoporosis causes bone loss and fractures, and affects 2 million Australians.

"I’m delighted that Cr Goodwin is supporting the National Healthy Bones Week," said Ms Savin.

"As many as four out of five people with osteoporosis do not know they have it.

"The week will invite us all to think about what we can do, no matter what our age, to look after our bone health."

Osteoporosis Victoria is the leading Victorian organisation for people with osteoporosis. They aim to improve quality of life, prevent disability, promote self management and positive health and fitness.
