Cruise Ship 'Artemis' To Arrive Next WeekThe P&O cruise ship "Artemis" will be visiting Cowes on Friday 23 December 2005. The ship is due to arrive at 6pm and depart Cowes at 10.30pm. By Bass Coast Shire - 16th December 2005 - Back to News Council’s Special Events Coordinator, Frank Angarane, says there is always an amount of uncertainty as to the numbers that disembark, not to mention the visit’s dependency on the weather.
"What we do know is that Artemis is a five star cruise ship weighing 45,000 tonnes and the ship can carry 1260 passengers and 520 crew.
"It is expected there will be over 1,000 passengers on board mainly of British and American origin.
"Of these, we are advised some 300-400 passengers will visit the Penguin Parade with the possibility a number of the remaining passengers, and possibly crew, will choose to come ashore and wander around the town.
Mr Angarane flagged the possibly of significant activity within the trading area of Cowes.
"However, this assumption needs to be considered with some caution because of the volatility of the weather and the uncertainty surrounding passenger intentions," he advised.
Council will put in place the following initiatives to assist with traffic management:
· The Jetty Triangle will be closed from midday to vehicular traffic to allow for passenger disembarkation and coach pick-ups.
· Police, Local Laws Officers and Council personnel will control traffic movements. For those interested in reading about the Artemis, information is available on their website www.cruisedirect.co.uk/po-cruises/artemis.
