Help Design Phillip Island and San RemoWant to have your say in the future of Phillip Island and San Remo? By Carol McCormack - 8th June 2001 - Back to News Want to have your say in the future of Phillip Island and San Remo? Now is your chance to get involved in the Phillip Island and San Remo Design Framework.
Council is calling for expressions of interest from members of the community who are interested in serving on an advisory team for the project, taking part in focus groups or receiving regular project update newsletters.
The project aims to establish a vision for the future of the area and a framework for achieving that vision.
"There will be significant community involvement in this project to ensure that the outcomes are relevant to residents and visitors alike," said Cr. Miranda Sage, Mayor of Bass Coast Shire Council. "The community is encouraged to get involved in the whole process from helping identify the issues of concern, finding the solutions and finally making them happen."
Council was successful in applying for "Pride of Place" funding through the Department of Infrastructure for the Phillip Island and San Remo Design Framework. The project will examine land use and development issues on the Island, San Remo and approaches to the Island from Anderson.
"This is an exciting opportunity for us to work together to develop a vision for Phillip Island and San Remo for the next 20 years," said Cr. Sage. "We will not only be creating a vision but also putting the process in place to actually see that vision become a reality."
"Bass Coast Shire Council is excited about this project and the opportunities that it will present to the Island and San Remo and the various communities that live, work and play here," she said.
Cr. Sage explained that there are many ways people can get involved in the project. A steering group will be established that will include representatives from the community, Council and Department of Infrastructure. Special interest focus groups will be established to help identify potential problems and their solutions. In addition, people can put their name on a mailing list and Council will send regular project newsletters at key stages in the project so that people will be kept informed of progress and future events.
"This project needs community involvement to be a success, said Cr. Sage. "I urge people to become involved and have their say."
It is anticipated this project will take approximately 11 months to complete. The draft framework plan prepared after community consultation is expected to be on exhibition for comment for at least a 10 week period over the summer period to allow residents and visitors ample opportunity to consider the report’s recommendations.
People interested in participating in the advisory committee, special interest focus groups or receiving regular updates about the project should contact Sue Porter at Bass Coast Shire Council on 5671 2211 or 5951 3311.
