Chairman of the Morwell Centenary Rose Garden committee, Ian Maguire, said that the event was the biggest in the garden’s history.

"More than sixty rosarians (those who specialise in the cultivation of roses) visited the rose garden, and we showed them around while the roses were at their very best. We received many compliments on its magnificent beauty," Mr Maguire said.

Members of the delegation included the National Rose Society of Australia and Victorian Rose Society president, Ian Spriggs. Presidents from the Queensland, New South Wales, South Australia and Western Australia Rose Society were also in attendance. Other special guests included Order of Australian Medal world renowned rosarian and horticulturist, David Ruston; Margaret MacGregor, vice president of the Australasian Wilderness First Responder Societies; South Australian rose breeder, George Thomson; South Australian head of Ross Roses, Maureen Ross; Victorian rose breeder, Dr Bruce Chapman and international visitor from Japan, Dr Yuki Mikanagi.

"A highlight of the day was the presentation of the Alister Clark Award to Dr Bruce Chapman and George Thomson. Ian Spriggs explained that the award is the highest accolade available to Australian rosarians, and is presented by the Australian Rose Breeder’s Association for outstanding services to the breeding of the rose," Mr Maguire explained.

Latrobe City mayor, Cr Tony Zimora said that having a delegation of so many high calibre rosarians visit the garden is a true mark of its success and status.

"The rose garden is a real asset to Morwell and surrounding areas, and is now developing a wide-reaching reputation as a premier rose garden. It is a fitting acknowledgement of the committee’s hard work and effort that the garden’s tranquil beauty be so well received by this prestigious delegation. I commend the army of volunteers that so selflessly give their time and skills to creating and maintaining this wonderful attraction for locals and visitors from further afield to enjoy," Cr Zimora concluded.
