Statement – Jobs, investment needed before Hazelwood closure In last year’s state budget the Andrews Labor Government tripled the coal royalty rate in Victoria costing Latrobe Valley generators an extra $252 million. By Portal Admin - 10th March 2017 - Back to News Daniel Andrews effectively closed Hazelwood power station by trebling this tax that forced up the cost of doing business in Victoria and ripped jobs from our community.
Daniel Andrews has now spent more than $500 million of taxpayers’ money to fix the damage of his decision, including on a rescue package that has failed to offer any job opportunities to hundreds of highly-skilled Hazelwood workers.
Just weeks before Hazelwood closes, an AEMO report released today showed Victoria faces a shortfall in gas supply in coming years.
But the Andrews Government’s answer is to seek a meeting with the Prime Minister, rather than looking in their own backyard and seeking a staged closure of Hazelwood.
