Staying Healthy In The HeatWith the recent bout of hot weather, Bass Coast Shire Council is keen to remind community members of the top four tips for coping with the heat. By Bass Coast - 13th January 2012 - Back to News Council’s Emergency Management Coordinator, James Bremner, said there are a number of simple things you can do to prevent the hot weather becoming a serious problem for yourself, your family and neighbours.
"The priorities are to keep out of the heat, to stay cool, drink regularly and help others," Mr Bremner said.
"Heatwaves can affect anybody, including the young and healthy. Stay indoors and close your curtains and blinds to block out the sun.
"If you must go outside, stay in the shade and wear a hat and light, loose ftting clothing. Take plenty of water with you.
"It is important to look after yourself and to keep in touch with others," Mr Bremner continued.
Council, in conjunction with a number of other local agencies and State Government departments, has developed a heatwave plan which aims to minimise the health impacts of extreme heat.
This is part of a state-wide initiative and is in response to life threatening situation of the January 2009 heatwave.
Mr Bremner said Council was working with these other organisations to ensure the messages developed by the Department of Health were promoted widely.
"It is important that the community is aware of the steps they could take to protect themselves during a heatwave.
"If people would like more information, the heatwave brochure Staying Healthy in the Heat provides a number of tips about preparing for hot weather as well as what to do on a heatwave day and important contact numbers," said Mr Bremner.
