Debate the politics of paint with Dick Bishop prize-winning exhibition The Politics of Paint is an event to explore more about art, a show at the Latrobe Regional Gallery and everybody is invited to come... Learn more about this event. By news@gippsland - 7th September 2016 - Back to News This year’s winner of the Dick Bishop Memorial Prize is Hayden Jackson, currently residing in Longford. Hayden studied Visual Arts at Monash University in Churchill (now Federation University). His exhibition ‘The Politics of Paint’ is currently on show at the Latrobe Regional Gallery, with never before seen large scale works, fresh from the studio.
Latrobe City Council’s arts director, Dr Mark Themann, said that Jackson was interested in ideas of masculinity and social beliefs around this subject, and in the potentialities and politics of paint.
"He composes forms and shapes to create large scale non-representational, abstract expressionist or loosely painted portraits, which reference male stereotypes and their social expectations, at the same time exploring the qualities of paint and its versatility as a medium.
"In abstracting masculine forms and pushing the boundaries of paint as a medium, Jackson aims to invite the viewer to look more deeply within his work. His use of colour creates a physicality which is suggestive of flesh and bone. At the same time he questions conventional ideas on what constitutes a ‘masculine’ colour palette," Dr Themann said.
"The exhibition continues until 2 October," Dr Themann concluded.
The Dick Bishop Memorial Prize is an ongoing recognition to Richard (Dick) Bishop’s (1929-2004) commitment to supporting emerging artists. Throughout his life, Dick Bishop provided arts education, support and encouragement to many members of our community and assisted them to fulfil their creative potential. The Dick Bishop Memorial Prize is awarded to an emerging Gippsland artist.
