Public Sculpture To Be Launched In Churchill

Local artist Jodie Goldring to have sculpture placed in Churchill Centre

By Jodie Goldring - 16th May 2002 - Back to News

The sculpture is a life size female form in rainbow colours, named Iris, after the Greek Goddess whom ancients considered to embody the rainbow.

Goldring explains; "in this context, the rainbow is used to embrace diversity by showing that many colours can exist alongside one another in a complimentary way.  This can be related to diverse people and how we live together in this community."

After approaching Peter Minster with an idea in early 2001, a year of part-time work by the artist has come to fruition.

Iris is a permanent representation of the rejuvenation process of the once underutilised Churchill Shopping Centre.  Iris will be positioned in front of the recently renovated Churchill memorial water feature, which is flowing once more.  It will potentially open up a new sense of the relationship between present and past.

Iris will be launched by the sponsor at Churchill Centre on Friday 17th May from 3 – 5pm.  A special presentation will be made by Julie Adams, Head of Gippsland Centre for Art and Design, Monash University, at 4pm.
