Changes Ahead For Rubbish CollectionThe way rubbish is collected and recycled in Bass Coast is about to change. By Bass Coast Shire Council - 1st June 2009 - Back to News As part of Bass Coast Shire Council’s new waste management contract, there will be changes to collection, recycling and hard rubbish services from the start of July.
Infrastructure Director, Steven Piasente, said the new system offers a higher level of service to residents.
"This new system will see a range of changes to Council’s rubbish collection services," explained Mr Piasente.
"Firstly, there will be a change to collection days. Towns that previously had collections over two days will now be completed on one. Hopefully this will make it less confusing for homeowners and will make things more efficient.
"Details of the new collection days are available on our website and they are listed on our waste calendars, which will be delivered to every household by the end of June," confirmed Mr Piasente.
Recycling
A number of changes are also being introduced to the recycling service.
"The change to rubbish collection days means that San Remo, Coronet Bay, Corinella and Tenby Point will all swap which week they get a recycling collection," said Mr Piasente.
"Where they were previously a Zone 1 on our waste calendars, they will now be Zone 2.
"Residents will also now be able to recycle plastics from 1 to 7, where previously only plastics graded 1, 2 or 3 could be included."
Mr Piasente said Council would now be providing recycling bins to residents free of charge. In the past, residents had to purchase a bin through Council.
"The State Government has set targets for reducing the amount of community waste going into landfill by 65 per cent by 2014," said Mr Piasente.
"By providing bins, we hope the rate of recycling across the shire will increase. From June, Wonthaggi Recyclers will start delivering these bins to properties that currently don’t have a recycling bin.
"The long term plan is to replace the old bins that are out there as well, so that within seven years, all our properties will have the standard recycling bin."
Over the busy summer period (29 December 2009 – 26 January 2010), there will be a weekly, rather than fortnightly recycling collection, to deal with the increased number of people in the Shire.
Hard Rubbish
The new waste contract will introduce a major change to the Hard Rubbish collection service.
"Previously, Council ran an annual free hard rubbish collection service," said Mr Piasente.
"Having hard rubbish left out on the kerbside created some real safety concerns, as well as making the streets look very untidy.
"This system is being replaced with an ‘at call’ collection service. Residents can book in if they need a hard rubbish collection and each property that receives a kerbside collection is entitled to one collection per year.
"If you book a collection, it will cost you $25 and the rubbish will be collected from your property, rather than having to put it out on the nature strip."
Details of how to book a collection and a list of items that cannot be included are available on Council’s website at www.basscoast.vic.gov.au.
