Local Laws Ready For Grand Prix Weekend

New focusing on issues raised by the community

By Carol McCormack - 8th October 2002 - Back to News

Bass Coast Shire Council will increase the number of Local Laws officers patrolling Phillip Island during the Grand Prix weekend, October 18-20. A 24-hour Local Laws hotline will also operate so that local residents and visitors can contact the Local Laws Team directly over the weekend.

The additional officers have been recruited from near-by municipalities to work with Bass Coast’s regular Local Laws Team.

"Local Laws officers and Victoria Police will be patrolling foreshore areas and local streets," said Kaye Hall, Local Laws Team Leader at Bass Coast Shire Council. "We will be focusing on issues raised by the community in previous years such as drinking in public places and illegal camping."

Kaye explained that the role of a Local Laws officer during events is not just enforcement, but also education.

"We would rather people did the right thing in the first place and we’re happy to talk to people about the fact that Local Laws exist to protect the safety of the entire community," said Kaye. "We want people to have a good time, but have a good time safely."

Over Grand Prix weekend, Local Laws officers will also be working directly with youth services officers and volunteers to combat the problem of underage drinking. Youth services officers and volunteers and Local Laws officers will patrol the streets and talk to young people.

"We are hoping to educate young people and offer assistance if needed," said Kaye Hall.

Local Laws officers will be visiting local businesses between now and the Grand Prix to distribute local parking permits for use throughout the Grand Prix weekend.
