Elm Removed In Kay Street
One of the iconic elms in Kay Street, Traralgon has been removed due to two major splits in the trunk which could not be repaired.
The tree was removed on Wednesday following a quarterly inspection. The tree will be replaced in winter next year with advanced trees, similar to other replacement trees in Kay Street.
Latrobe City Council’s mayor, Councillor Sharon Gibson, said it was sad to see trees removed but safety was the top priority.
"In this case, the trunk splits were beyond repair using any remedial arboricultural techniques such as bracing. This means the tree poses an immediate and serious risk to the public. It was removed early on Wednesday so that peak morning foot traffic close to the site would not be affected.
"The damaged trunks account for about 35% of total tree canopy, so removal of these trunks would result in opening up the remaining tree canopy to an arboricultural condition known as ‘wind throw’. This condition would likely result in further failures of the other main trunks and may put pedestrians at an increased risk," Cr Gibson said.
"The winter inspection is the most important inspection of the year as trees can be surveyed without their leaf canopy. This gives the truest indication of the tree’s condition.
"The avenue of elms is a valued part of the streetscape in Traralgon and so of course we will replace the tree. An advanced specimen around 4 to 6 metres in height will be planted at the spot next winter," Cr Gibson concluded.
