Council’s Infrastructure Director, Steve Piasente, said the green waste amnesty was designed to encourage residents and property owners to clean up around their properties and was the perfect opportunity to prepare for the upcoming fire season.

"The CFA recommend all residents prepare their properties and keep it well maintained throughout the Fire Danger Period," said Mr Piasente.

"We’re encouraging all Bass Coast residents and property owners to take advantage of our green waste amnesty period to clean up their blocks."

Here are some practical works that all property owners and residents should do:

§ Keep grass cut it should be no longer than 10cm throughout summer

§ Reduce "fine fuels" – including long, dry grass and fallen leaves and twigs

§ Clear away dead undergrowth and fallen branches

§ Clean leaves from gutters

"This can reduce the fire risk to your property as well as your neighbours," continued Mr Piasente.

"Materials that can’t be mulched such as palm fronds or weed species will, as usual, be classed as general waste and will not be free of charge.

"For more information you can pick up a copy of The Common Weeds of Gippsland at Council Customer Service Centres or access it online.

"Removing trees and shrubs can be costly and may be unnecessary. If you’re planning on removing vegetation, we suggest you contact the Bushfire Information Hotline on 1800 240 667 to assess your bushfire risk before embarking on any major works," continued Mr Piasente.

People who require assistance transporting green waste should contact a private contractor.
