The infrequent weather conditions made it difficult for players to get bat to ball. The round featured a top of the table clash between Traralgon and Sale and Moe/Newborough battling against Morwell.
The Dodgers continued their fine home form with an 11-0 victory over the struggling Cougars. Appalling conditions forced the game to stop and start three times. The Dodgers ten safe hits to Morwell’s six together with some untimely errors in the field by Morwell resulted in the final score. The Dodgers led 4-0 after the first and scored consistently in the next three innings to set up victory. Double plays by the Dodgers ensured no Morwell runner past second base. Brian Spiteri had three hits for the Dodgers and Jason Barnes had two hits for Morwell.
The B grade game saw an upset with the Cougars defeating the highly fancied Moe/Newborough. Morwell scored runs in each innings to win 8-7. Tony Heppleston pitched a great game for the Cougars with six strikeouts. The Dodgers added two runs late but the Cougars held on. Best for Morwell was Stephen Baleisa, Nigel Aubrey & Gregg Duncan. David Robinson, Tim Wilson & Mark Wilson were the top performers for Moe/Newborough.
Morwell had a convincing win over the Dodgers in the under 14 contest, 13-3. Leading throughout the young Cougars side were never seriously challenged. Cory Clark, Matthew Moffat & Matthew Landsdown led the Cougars and Lee Armstrong and Tim Tobias were the best for the Dodgers.
In the top of the table clash at Traralgon the Rangers came to play. The Redsox were unable to hit the ball and convert runners on base to runs over the plate. The muddy conditions underfoot made stealing bases difficult. John Kus started on the mound for the Redsox and slowed the runs from the Sale bats. Traralgon only managed six hits for the game resulting in one run behind a Davis Long centre field single. Owen Godenzi came to the mound for Traralgon and the runs dried up, with the final score being 7-1 in Sale’s favour.
Traralgon were victorious 4-3 in a tight low scoring contest in B grade. Sale were kept scoreless in their opening two digs with good pitching and fielding as the Redsox went to a 2-0 lead. A double play by Luke Hornstra was the highlight of the game, taking a catch and making the out at second base. Wells Humphrey and Wayne Beams had two hits for the Redsox.
Playing conditions were difficult in the C grade game resulting in the early finish with Traralgon victorious 8-7. The Redsox started strongly scoring seven runs out of a possible nine. In the second dig Sale hit back hard scoring seven runs of their own. Traralgon then added another run in what was panning out to be an exciting finish. Unfortunately the inclement weather forced the game to be abandoned.
The under 16 game was very close with home runs scored by both teams. Sale was able to hold Traralgon, with the final score being 7-6. For Traralgon, Matt McLean, and Rohan Patten had singles, Steve Cox had two singles, Cary Humphrey had a double and Travis Hemming had two singles and a home run. In the under 14’s Traralgon couldn’t quite catch Sale, going down 6-2. Brendan Soloman had the only safe hit for Traralgon, and Kate Neave made an excellent play at first base.
The action continues this Sunday as the finals draw near with round seventeen games. Morwell hosts Churchill, the Redsox travel to Yarram to take on the Stealers and Sale battles Moe/Newborough. The public is welcome.
