The Buchan Butter Factory will get $27,000 from the State Government's Public Heritage Program. Welcoming the grant, the Member for Gippsland East, Craig Ingram, said the money would pay for restoration work so the community could use the building for performances and exhibitions. "The Buchan Butter Factory was built by 1910 and was an early example of the use of reinforced concrete. The factory has several floor levels because of the butter-making process. Produce was sent to Nowa Nowa by horse and wagon. "The factory and store was a victim of the economic hard times and closed in 1930 despite fund-raising from local residents. In 1937, it was bought and renovated, and soon re-opened as a butter factory and grain store. "The Butter for Britain campaign stimulated demand during the Second World War and, for a time, the factory flourished. Butter from the factory won a number of prizes both nationally and internationally. But in 1948, the factory closed once more and the building was used as a garage, machinery repair business and store shed. "The factory is now owned by the Buchan Heritage Group. "The restoration will make the building safe, weatherproof and more user-friendly. The work completes other improvements to the streetscape of the town in recent years." Mr Ingram said this project was one of 26 to receive funding in Round 7 of the Public Heritage Program. "This factory is a small but important part of our State's heritage. With investment from the Public Heritage Program, we can further protect our history from crumbling away," he concluded.
