A series of four public meetings have been called by Latrobe City Council to enable the community to provide input into appropriate speed limits near schools and in residential zones.

Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Brendan Jenkins, said that there was widespread concern in the community about inappropriate speed restrictions near school crossings and in zones adjacent to schools, and the meetings would give citizens the opportunity to provide input into Council’s advice to VicRoads over the issue.

"All road speed limits are set by VicRoads, and Council can only provide advice to VicRoads over speed limit issues," Councillor Jenkins explained.

"However, we have been concerned for some time that the speed limit in certain areas near schools is inappropriately high at times, significantly when the footpaths and school crossings are busy with children on their way to and from school.

"Since last year, Council has been evaluating appropriate speeds in these zones in conjunction with schools across the municipality. We have now reached the stage where we are also seeking the views of citizens, to ensure we furnish appropriate advice to VicRoads," Cr Jenkins said.

"A normal speed limit of 60 km/h on a road in a school zone, might be reduced to 40 km/h at times when children are going to school or returning home from school. On some roads there may not be a need to impose a special limit, because a roundabout or other traffic calming measure already prevents motorists from exceeding 30 km/h, or traffic travels slowly because of other traffic conditions for example. Those are the sorts of ideas and issues we are evaluating," Cr Jenkins said.

"These meetings will also give citizens an opportunity to comment on the 50 kilometre/hour speed limit introduced for residential streets by the State Government in January, and the speed limits imposed on roads assessed as significant traffic routes," Cr Jenkins added.

The consultative meetings start at 7.30pm and take place at Moe Town Hall, Monday 14 May (Moe, Newborough and Yallourn North areas); Traralgon Performing Arts Centre, Traralgon, Wednesday 23 May (Traralgon, Traralgon South, Toongabbie, Glengarry and Tyers areas); Churchill Community Hall, Churchill, Wednesday 30 May (Churchill, Yinnar, Yinnar South, Boolarra and Hazelwood North areas); and Kernot Hall, Morwell, Wednesday 6 June (Morwell area).
