Innovative Workplace Project a Success at GippsTAFE!GippsTAFE’s Library staff were recently presented with their Certificate I in Information Technology qualification after completing an innovative work based learning project. By Support Account - 27th March 2003 - Back to News GippsTAFE’s Library staff were recently presented with their Certificate I in Information Technology qualification after completing an innovative work based learning project.
GippsTAFE’s Organisational Development Department and Business Studies Department developed a work based learning project in a highly flexible manner that provided for recognition of current skills and knowledge of GippsTAFE’s own library staff.
The library staff identified the need to enhance their Information Technology skills, allowing them to be better placed to serve the needs of students.
The program was flexible enough to allow participants to progress at their own pace, use a variety of training sources and have regular access to a work based trainer.
"It was impossible to maintain our service levels whilst simultaneously releasing staff to participate in timetabled classes," Library Coordinator Suzanne Poulter explained.
"The staff wanted ongoing teacher support and meaningful training with enormous flexibility."
A series of information booklets, learner resources and work tasks were developed and were made available as hard copy, on CD Rom and via the Internet.
Staff were then enrolled in the new nationally accredited Certificate I in Information Technology.
The work based trainer assessed the staff’s current skills and knowledge, provide phone and email support and individualised programs were prepared.
Feedback from the Library staff was extremely positive, with more than 87 percent of staff eligible to receive an IT qualification.
Major benefits to date of the project have been increased levels of assistance provided to staff and students and more innovative work practices.
If your business or organisation is interested in developing a work based learning project, please contact GippsTAFE’s Business Studies Department on 5127 0277.
