Petrol Price Slashed For Moe Cup Day Three-Hour SaleEvery retailer in town will be offering great bargains on everything from furniture to food to fashion By Chris Buckingham - 1st October 2002 - Back to News •Tell us your opinion •See what others have said More than 1000 people are expected to take advantage of cheap petrol and gas during Moe’s third annual three-hour sale on Thursday, 17 October.
Every retailer in town will participate in the sale from 9am until 12 noon, offering great bargains on everything from furniture to food and fashion, plus the chance to win $1000.
More than 7000 people from across Victoria are expected to attend the event, which is part of an aggressive drive to lure retail trade away from big city shopping centres ahead of Christmas.
Chris Buckingham Convenor of the Moe Cup Day 3 Hour sale said: "Moe is back on track…as a community we have taken a pounding in the past…the town is rebuilding itself and this day represents a new optimism about the future of Moe…’
Independent petrol station owner Mr Perry Hortis from Savages Rd Service Station is leading the charge, slashing fuel by five cents a litre to prove his commitment to competition.
"We know the people of Moe are behind us. What we are really trying to do is encourage people from outside Moe to give the town a chance," Mr Hortis said.
Chris Buckingham said: ‘Perry has our full support. He is losing money on the day, but his family knows the whole community will benefit. Their action really sums up what the Moe Community is all about…pulling together for the benefit of the whole town.’
Streets will be closed to traffic for the huge community event with live music, clowns, face painting, street stalls and entertainment all adding to the carnival atmosphere. Radio 3GG will be doing an outside broadcast and there will be live music performed by GippsTAFE band and Frank Garner.
The theme for this year’s Cup Day sale is "Moe on Track", adding to the excitement of the annual race day and highlighting the positive momentum and community spirit within the Moe community.
Initially threatened by soaring insurance costs, this year’s sale was rescued by a lifeline from the City of Latrobe.
