Adult Learners Week ContinuesDavid Valler decided to return to study so he could get a job and do something different with his life By Eimear McNelis - 29th August 2002 - Back to News After finishing secondary school Mr Valler worked as an accountant at a credit union in Moe, then became a ‘house husband’, raising his two children for several years.
"I have always been addicted to books, my children call me a nerd!" said Mr Valler.
"Then last year I decided to do a SCOPE course and found that I had the ability to write."
"I decided to enrol in Certificate IV in Professional Writing and Editing at GippsTAFE after seeing author Garry Disher talk about writing there."
During the course Mr Valler is learning to write under pressure, poetry, creative writing, and is learning to use a computer.
"At first I didn’t know what to expect, but I fitted in really well after the first few classes."
Mr Valler is writing a children’s book in his spare time and would like to complete a Diploma of Professional Writing and Editing after this course.
"I like that the course is fairly relaxed, with good teachers and good people to learn with. We have many people from all walks of life in the class and it is great for all of us to get together and talk about writing."
Mr Valler would eventually like to do a cultural and heritage course to become a Cultural Practitioner, which involves researching buildings and writing various reports in the restoration of specific buildings and monuments.
"This course has given me real career avenues; it does not lead to a dead end."
"Returning to study has been brilliant, I love being creative and I would recommend it to anyone."
GippsTAFE’s Certificate IV in Professional Writing and Editing provides training in creative, business and technical writing. It is a pathway to employment and tertiary study in writing and journalism.
