Exhibition designed to ponder our existence Jennifer Hawkins’ first solo exhibition, "We are made of star stuff", explores the cycle of evolution and extinction. Learn more about it. By Portal Admin - 12th August 2016 - Back to News Jennifer Hawkins’ first solo exhibition, We are made of star stuff, explores the cycle of evolution and extinction, and she proposes that prayers and particles may be the links that complete the circle.
Latrobe City Council’s arts director, Dr Mark Themann, said that Hawkins spent many hours meticulously crafting her works, using an array of materials including found objects.
"These found objects include semi-precious stones, animal bones and skulls, as well as organic matter such as leaves and feathers. Hawkins asks the big questions: ‘where do we come from?’ and ‘where do we go?’," Dr Themann said.
Hawkins believes that human beings are making the planet uninhabitable for most species, including our own. As the human population grows at a rate of 228,000 per day, and as other species are becoming extinct at the rate of dozens per day, Hawkins considers the planet going on to fulfill its destiny and questions ‘where does that leave us?’
"In this, and in reference to the exhibition title, Hawkins believes that we are all connected – to each other, to the universe. This exhibition explores the cycle of that connection and asks us to reflect on our ecology and own interpretations of life on our planet," Dr Themann concluded.
We are made of star stuff by Jennifer Hawkins has been curated by Latrobe Regional Gallery’s senior curator, Shelley McDermott, and will run to 21 August 2016 at the Latrobe Regional Gallery.
