Single Use Plastic Bag Ban Comes Into Effect Friday

Starting 1 November single use plastic bags will be banned from retail outlets.

Member for Morwell Russell Northe is reminding local businesses and consumers that from this Friday 1 November single use plastic bags will be banned from many retail outlets.

The ban applies to plastic bags (either wholly or partly plastic) with handles, with thickness of 35 micrometres or less at any part of the bag. This includes bags made from degradable, biodegradable and compostable plastic. This applies to new and reused bags.

From Friday retailers must not sell or provide a banned plastic bag to a person to carry or transport goods sold, or provided, by the retailer from their premises.

Under the ban, a retailer, wholesaler, or manufacturer of plastic bags must not provide, whether by act or omission, provide false or misleading information about banned bags.

"Reducing the use of single use plastic bags will reduce plastic bag litter, whilst also encouraging the use of more sustainable products and packaging." Mr Northe said.

Mr Northe is encouraging consumers to utilise re-useable bags when they are out and about shopping. Local shoppers are able to collect re-usable bags from Mr Northe’s office, 12-14 George Street, Morwell.
