Network Engenders Greater Arts Opportunities For StudentsThe inaugural Arts Teachers Network meeting took place recently at the Latrobe Regional Gallery, with over 35 teachers attending the event. By Latrobe City Council - 12th August 2005 - Back to News The Arts Teachers Network provides a forum where those teaching art in educational institutions across the Latrobe Valley can gain knowledge on arts-related issues and share learning and practice.
Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Bruce Lougheed, said that a wealth of opportunities could be presented to arts students across the region such as exhibitions mounted by the Latrobe Regional Gallery, and performances initiated through Latrobe City’s performing arts program.
"However, there is much more in the arts community for students to tap into. There are private galleries, community galleries, groups involved in numerous forms of art, and individual artists who are happy to share with young people the talents and the skills they have accumulated over the years.
"By networking, these opportunities can be made more widely known among the teaching fraternity, and by discussing the needs of teachers with artists and art facilities, arts programs can often be tweaked to facilitate the student curriculum," Cr Lougheed said.
Latrobe City’s Arts Innovation Facilitator, Lynette Raven, said Latrobe City’s Arts Unit had spent considerable time over the past year conducting meetings, and holding brainstorming sessions and workshops for local Arts teachers and school principals in order establish the network. "It was really encouraging that so many teachers attended the inaugural event," Ms Raven said.
"As a result of the meeting, the region’s arts teachers are now better equipped to share ideas with each other and network with Council’s own Arts Unit, leading to young people being provided with enhanced opportunities for studying the arts," Ms Raven explained.
"The new network will also further Council’s strategy of encouraging greater engagement in the arts by Latrobe’s young people," Ms Raven concluded.
