Preparing for growth in Bass Coast

Bass Coast Shire Council’s Economic Development Strategy 2016-2021, adopted at this week’s meeting, will guide Council activity over the next five years to facilitate growth and economic investment in Bass Coast.

Bass Coast Mayor, Cr Jordan Crugnale, said the Strategy provides a blueprint for how Council will work with the community, local businesses, investors and government partners to drive sustainable economic development.

"It recognises Council’s ongoing commitment to provide high quality services, programs and events for businesses and the community," Cr Crugnale said.

"The natural environment underpins the Bass Coast economy and is a key driver for tourism and agriculture and we clearly understand that the natural environment forms the basis of the local economy.

"This Strategy aims to create a more connected business community and make Bass Coast a leader in business sustainability and growth.

"We look forward to continuing to engage and partner with businesses and industry as we further develop a sustainable and vibrant local economy."

The Strategy outlines Council’s vision for economic development for the Shire and identifies key activities to enhance the prosperity of Bass Coast.

It focusses on five key themes which are closely linked to the Council Plan 2013-2017:

  • Growing our businesses
  • Sustainable economy
  • Visiting Bass Coast
  • Economic Diversity
  • Farming for the future

Consultation on the draft Strategy was held throughout December 2015 and January 2016, which a range of internal and external stakeholders, such as local business operators, potential investors, local business and tourism associations and the general community.

Council received 30 submissions, with all feedback reviewed and included in the final version of the Strategy where appropriate.

"This Strategy has been development with extensive input from Council and a wide range of key external stakeholders, and we’d like to thank everyone who provide feedback and contributed to the final plan," Cr Crugnale said.
