Workshop encourages women to stand for CouncilBy Latrobe City Council - 5th September 2005 - Back to News A workshop offering practical advice for women interested in becoming an elected councillor or supporting others in the November council elections, is being held in the Nambur Wariga Room at the corporate headquarters in Morwell at 7pm on Thursday 15 September 2005.
The ‘Women Get Elected’ workshop is part of the state-wide ‘Women Get Elected’ program which aims to increase the number of Victorian women involved in local government.
The program is supporting local workshops around the State in the lead-up to the November 2005 council elections, when 54 councils will go to the polls.
Councillor Angela Altair, Chair of the Women's Participation in Local Government (WPILG) Coalition, said that Latrobe City’s council elections, being held by postal ballot on 26 November 2005, are a focus for the campaign to attract more women to take on public leadership roles in the community.
"If the ratios of those elected to the role of councillors more accurately reflected the approximately equal proportions of women men in the community, there’d be similar ratios of women and men serving as councillors today," Cr Altair said.
"We're not saying that women are better than men - we are saying that women are 51% of the community and bring different experiences and a promise of better diversity to local government.
"Only 29% of Victorian councillors are women. Currently, in Latrobe City, 3 of the 9 elected councillors are women. Many women who are already involved in local issues and organisations have the necessary personal skills and local knowledge to undertake the role of Councillor," Cr Altair added.
Topics at the workshop will include decision making about standing for election, planning a campaign, and maximising the chances of success. Those interested in attending the workshop can register by contacting Caroline Flake at Latrobe City Council, telephone 5128 5657.
