Bass Coast Waste Disposal Fees Rise

Bass Coast Shire Council’s Waste Transfer and Recycling Station fees, and recycling bin costs, will have a minor increase from 1 August 2007.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 23rd July 2007 - Back to News

Bass Coast Shire Mayor, Cr Neville Goodwin, said the changes were necessary to cover increased operating costs.

"Any fee rises are unwelcome. However, the significant increases in State Government Landfill Levy rates, and transport costs, have made it unavoidable," Cr Goodwin informed.

"The rise in tip fees is also needed to construct additional landfill space, and rehabilitate the Grantville Landfill and Rhyll Transfer Station sites.

"And in the case of recycling bins, price increases from our supplier mean we have to raise the fee in order to keep the service cost neutral," Cr Goodwin added.

The altered fees, adopted as part of the 2007-08 Budget on 18 July, include:

  • General Waste (up to 3 cubic metres) – up from $20 to $25 per cubic metre;
  • General Waste (over 3 cubic metres at Grantville Landfill only) – up from $68 to $70 per tonne;
  • Garden Waste (excludes tree stumps and weeds) – up from $9 to $12 per cubic metre; and
  • Asbestos (from domestic source – Grantville Landfill only) – up from $68 to $70 per tonne.

From the 1 August 2007, the cost for a 240 litre capacity recycling bin or commercial rubbish bin will increase from $55 to $70. This price includes GST and delivery.

Residents are still able to dispose of up to two 70 litre bags of waste free of charge once a week. Sorted recyclables can be disposed free of charge at any time.

Garden waste can also be disposed free of charge from 1 November 2007 until 10 December 2007. This is to help property owners clean up their land prior to fire season.
