Churchill Pool closed pending evaluation of critical workThe Churchill Leisure Centre pool has been closed pending evaluation of options for undertaking critical work on the roof area. By Latrobe City Council - 19th January 2004 - Back to News Leisure Centre user groups were fully briefed about the issue and the immediate contingency plans on Friday 16 January following an inspection of the facility, with Monash advised of the possible situation on Wednesday, as Monash provides staff to operate the Churchill Leisure Centre.
Latrobe City’s General Manager City Services, Greg Phillips, said Council had no option but to close the Leisure Centre pool following the inspection, and explained that contingency plans had been put into place to ensure users of the facility were inconvenienced as little as possible.
"The decision to close the pool area at the Churchill Leisure Centre was made as the inspection assessment clearly demonstrated that the condition of the roof lining could pose an unacceptable risk to pool users and Monash staff," Mr Phillips explained.
Mr Phillips said every possible step will be taken to ensure that customers who use the Churchill pool are not disadvantaged by its temporary closure. "Groups that currently use the Churchill pool will be provided with access to either the Morwell Leisure Centre pool, the Moe Newborough Sports Centre indoor pool or to other outdoor aquatic facilities within the municipality, and alternative arrangements at other venues made for the continuation of organised programs that featured at the pool."
"Transport will be provided from the Churchill Leisure Centre to other municipal aquatic facilities whilst investigations continue into how best to address the issues of the indoor pool. This service, provided on a daily basis, will be assessed at the conclusion of the school holidays. It is envisaged that this service will continue on weekends if the need is demonstrated.
"Members of the Churchill Leisure Centre who use the Churchill Pool will be provided with access to either the Morwell or Moe indoor pool complexes. Their membership of the Churchill Leisure Centre will be transferable to these facilities to ensure that no disadvantage occurs," Mr Phillips stressed.
"Times of operating the indoor pool complexes at the Moe Newborough and Morwell Leisure Centres will also be reviewed to account for the operating times and usage patterns at the Churchill Leisure Centre Pool.
Mr Phillips said Council would continue to keep Leisure Centre users and the community at large informed on the matter.
