Newhaven Marina ExpansionNewhaven Yacht Club Squadron is proposing to expand the Newhaven Marina. By Bass Coast Shire Council - 30th September 2005 - Back to News The $2.4 million project will extend the existing marina from 121 berths to 188. The plan to install modern floating marine berths will enable the marina to accommodate boats between 10.5 metres and 12 metres long. The current facilities only allow for a maximum berth size of 10 metres.
Excavation and modification
The proposal would require excavating of the harbour basin, removal of the settlement ponds and modifications to the northern-most sea wall of the ponds.
"In order to create the required space for the extra berths within the marina, we’re proposing that the settlement ponds be removed," said Newhaven Yacht Squadron Committee member Peter Salisbury.
"The northern wall of the ponds would be modified and retained as a revetment wall", explained Mr Salisbury.
These changes to the marina would significantly improve the facilities of the Yacht Club, with additional carparks included as part of the proposal.
Purchasing a berth
Newhaven Yacht Club is currently selling berths off the plan, with more than 1/3 of the spaces already sold.
In contrast to many other yacht clubs, where it is only possible to purchase a lease on a berth, Newhaven operate a ‘right to occupy’ scheme. This provides for use of the berth as long as you remain a member of the Club, with the option to sell the berth back to the Club at the original purchase price.
Council is currently considering the application and has refered it to a number of other Government agencies including the Department of Sustainability and Environment, for comment.
