Reading Rocks!A wide range of activities is being organised for kids across the municipality for national Children’s Book Week (22-26 August), as Wellington Shire Council celebrates the 200th anniversary of Hans Christian Andersen’s birth. By Wellington Shire Council - 17th August 2005 - Back to News Following the theme Reading Rocks, Library staff will be busy all week reading books short-listed for this year’s Children’s Book Awards, as they run story-time sessions for schools and kindergartens throughout the shire. Participating kids will also have the opportunity to do a craft activity and will receive a small show bag.
Children’s Book Week is an annual event which promotes literacy and a love of reading to our children. Last year more than 2,200 children across the shire took part and it is hoped that this year will be even more successful.
This annual event is coordinated nationwide by the Children’s Book Council of Australia, which this year also celebrates its 60th birthday. A not-for-profit organisation, it was established in 1945 to promote children’s literature and encourage youngsters to read, and can now boast a branch in every state and territory. Each year it short-lists and presents awards to Australian authors and illustrators of children’s books.
Said Wellington’s Mayor Peter Gault: "This council is delighted to provide youngsters with plenty of exciting opportunities to explore reading as part of Children’s Book Week.
"This annual event is a special time for our public libraries. It provides them with a great opportunity to show children what they have to offer, which will hopefully encourage many to return and make full use of the facilities on a regular basis and to embark on a life-long love of reading."
