Yesterday the Minister for Planning approved the amendment (C87) that allows part of the site at 116 Gap Road, Cowes to be used for a materials and recycling transfer station.

Bass Coast Shire Council’s Planning and Environment Director, Hannah Duncan-Jones, said this signalled the end of the consultation process involving the Phillip Island community, Council and an independent planning panel.

"This has been a lengthy and in depth process to get to this stage," said Ms Duncan-Jones.

"In his letter of approval to Council, the Minister said the ‘amendment...may assist in meeting the objectives of Victoria's Zero Waste Strategy’.

"Once the conditions of the approval have been satisfied the developer can act on their plan to create a waste facility on the site.

"Work needs commence within two years," continued Ms Duncan-Jones.
