Next Meeting

When: Monday 20th of October 2003

Time: 7:15 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Where: Salvation Army Hall,

Bridle Road, Morwell.

Our September meeting was attended by Brendan Jenkins member for Morwell, John Truman Acting Regional Housing Manager and Maree Davidson Gippsland Manager of Community Housing. Concerns were raised with Brendan about the incidence of chroming in the area. Legislation is in The Victorian Parliament at the moment that will allow the police to confiscate chroming materials from offenders. John Truman spoke of the role of Regional Housing in the Latrobe Valley. Maree Davidson is responsible for respite housing where tenants need somewhere to stay for a short period, usually three months.

Child Safety in Swimming Pools and Spas

With the warmer weather approaching now is the time to assess how secure your pool or spa is to prevent access by unattended children.

The most common cause of death for children under five years of age is drowning. Last year, 35 children drowned in Australia’s backyard pools, spas, dams and even bathtubs. In the interests of child safety, the State Government introduced new pool safety regulations on 21 December, 2001. Under the regulations, ALL gates and doors providing access to a pool or spa MUST be fitted with self-closing and self latching devices. Pool owners with previously approved barriers may find they no longer comply. When in doubt consult the city building inspector. Be sure rather than sorry.

Illegal Fireworks:

The increasing undisciplined use of fireworks illegally by a small number of anti-social people in the community, has an adverse effect on animals. It is responsible for traumatising many dogs to the extent that they go missing.

In a traumatised state, many become victims of road accidents or are otherwise injured. Others face starvation or are attacked by other animals. Many never see their homes again, with heartbreaking consequences for their owners.

You can help stamp out this growing menace and its deplorable consequences by reporting the illegal use of fireworks and crackers to the police. This action may spoil the fun of a few people, but will be making life a lot safer and happier for your communities innocent animals and their loving human families. (From The Neighbourhood Watch Sentinel)

Crime Stoppers:

Ring Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 any time you have information on a crime which may lead to an arrest.

Do not ring Crime Stoppers in an emergency or when a crime is in progress, ring 000. If you are a victim in an emergency ring 000, or a non emergency ring your local police.
