Sacred Heart Primary to benefit from road transfer

Sacred Heart Schoolchildren are to be provided with safer access to their sports facilities and Sacred Heart Church, following a decision by Latrobe City Council to close part of Wilson Street, and transfer the property to the school.

Sacred Heart Schoolchildren are to be provided with safer access to their sports facilities and Sacred Heart Church, following a decision by Latrobe City Council to close part of Wilson Street, and transfer the property to the school. A pedestrian easement is to remain.

Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Brendan Jenkins said the land transfer would remove the hazard that the schoolchildren faced from traffic entering the street, while protecting the rights of pedestrians who used part of Wilson Street as an access between Elgin Street and Commercial Road.

"Part of Wilson Street has been barricaded to traffic at the Commercial Road end or many years, so there is no through traffic and there are no residences or businesses in that section. However, schoolchildren and their teachers have to constantly be aware that there may be street traffic, particularly at times when parents pick up and drop off their children at school. By closing the road to traffic entirely, the obvious risk factor is overcome, and children will be able to cross from the school to their play area in safety," Cr Jenkins said.

Councillor Darrell White said the road closure would allow the school to develop. "In years gone past, Wilson Street was the main access route for traffic crossing the railway line from the north side going to the Morwell CBD. Sacred Heart School was developed on land owned by the Roman Catholic Church on the opposite corner of Wilson Street; but the sorts of traffic volumes we experience today, were never remotely envisaged," Cr White explained.

"As traffic volumes increased, crossing Wilson Street became a nightmare for the schoolchildren, so Wilson Street was barricaded and Elgin Street bound traffic was diverted via White or Chapel Street. As it would be now be inconceivable to reopen that part of Wilson Street to traffic, we have negotiated to transfer the road title to the Roman Catholic Church who will accept the responsibility for creating and maintaining a public footpath," Cr White added.

Wilson Street will remain open between Elgin Street and Mc Lean Street and that section is not affected by the land transfer.
