Cctv Making Morwell Train Station Precinct Safer

CCTV cameras have been installed to monitor the Morwell V-Line train station precinct in a joint effort between Latrobe City, V-Line, the State Government and Victoria Police to improve safety in the area.

The cameras were installed during November and have been operational since December. They feed to Victoria Police Station in Morwell and are recorded on site.

Latrobe City mayor, Councillor Ed Vermeulen said that the installation of CCTV was important to help the community feel safe.

"CCTV plays an important part in deterring those who engage in anti-social behaviour. We hope that the installation of cameras will help to make those who use the precinct feel safer and more secure," Cr Vermeulen said.

V-Line’s regional manager Tim Pianta said that Victoria Police would be monitoring the CCTV footage on an ongoing basis as they currently do for the Morwell Bus Interchange cameras.

"Adding additional CCTV cameras to the existing system monitored by local police was clearly a good opportunity to improve safety and security around the Railway Station," Mr Pianta said.

Funding for the provision of CCTV cameras and monitoring equipment was supplied jointly by Latrobe City Council (through the Victorian Government Transit Cities Program) and V-Line.

Tanjil ward councillor, Councillor Bruce Lougheed said that he was pleased to see the project come to fruition through the cooperation of all involved.

"The partnership between Latrobe City, V-Line, the State Government and Victoria Police in delivering this project has resulted in a positive safety outcome for locals and commuters alike, this is yet another example of agencies working together for the good of our local community," Cr Lougheed concluded.

The Transit Cities program is a state-government initiative centred on creating safe, vibrant and accessible communities. It involves long and short term strategies that promote access to services, opportunities and other networks through key public transport precincts in Moe, Morwell and Traralgon.
