A Latrobe City Council initiative which introduced a new two year preschool program in Boolarra in August, will be offered in Tyers in 2001.Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Tony Hanning said the program would be expanded following the successful response shown by Boolarra families since its inception. “The program offers up to ten hours of pre-kinder for three year olds instead of the usual two hours, giving rural families more flexibility,” Cr Hanning explained. “There is a very real need for more flexibility in these rural areas, as families have further to travel, and rural duties can also be extremely time consuming. “This program provides more options for families, and with smaller enrolments of four year olds in these communities, additional places for pre-kinder can be absorbed by the existing staff, Cr Hanning said. The idea for a two year preschool program was first mooted in 1999, when the then La Trobe Shire engaged the services of consultants to review preschool and childcare units operated by Council. One of the key areas investigated by the consultancy firm was the long-term future and viability of Council’s small rural preschools. “The investigation was prompted by the need to create a more certain future for our small rural preschools,” Cr Hanning said. “We needed to look at new ways of improving preschool enrolments in our region and the two year program emerged as a real option. It has since drawn a very positive response in Boolarra, and it with great pleasure that we are now in the position to be able to offer the program in Tyers in 2001. “Children enrolled in the prekinder program offering the extended hours will be given special consideration at Boolarra or Tyers when placing their preschool enrolment for the following year,” Cr Hanning added. “Sessions will be extended on parental request only where the preschool teacher and parent are satisfied that the child is ready for another session,” Cr Hanning concluded.
