Green waste charges waived this weekend for fire clean-upBy Latrobe Shire Council - 22nd November 2004 - Back to News Green waste charges for the disposal of leaves, grass and small tree branches for all City residents will be waived at Pine Gro green waste collection centres in Moe, Morwell and Traralgon from 9am to 5pm this Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 November 2004.
Latrobe City Municipal Fire Prevention Officer, Lance King, explained that with summer fast approaching, Latrobe City Council is urging all property owners to prepare their property for the fire season, and the waiving of green waste charges on the coming weekend provides an additional incentive for residents to clean up.
"There is often a high risk of fires occurring on properties during the summer months and owners should take some necessary precautions," Mr King said.
"Before the fire season begins, all property owners and residents should ensure that grass on their property is well-cut, fallen leaves and dead undergrowth has been cleared from near their house, leaves have been cleaned out of gutters, and trees and shrubs have been planted away from the home," Mr King said.
Mr King also reminded rural and rural living property owners in Latrobe City that the Permit to Burn that was issued at the conclusion of the last fire danger period will expire at the end of November.
"All people conducting burns in the next week should remember that they must make sure adequate water is on site to use in case of an emergency, there is a minimum fire break of two metres cleared around the area to be burnt and there is an adult in attendance at all times a fire is burning," Mr King said.
"Acting Manager Waste Services, Nick Francolino, said that it was important that residents remember that green waste is no longer accepted at Council’s transfer stations but only at the dedicated green waste facilities or through the fortnightly green waste collection as part of the three-bin system introduced earlier in the year.
"Since the introduction of the new three-bin system, most residents will find that they can adequately dispose of their garden waste through the fortnightly green waste collection," Mr Francolino said.
"However, if a resident has undertaken a major clean-up, or if a tree has fallen on their property and the have a large amount, they can take their green waste to a Pine Gro collection facility for recycling," Mr King added.
The Morwell green waste collection centre operates seven days a week, 9am to 5pm; and the Moe and Traralgon centres operate 9am to 5pm at weekends.
