John Peart Exhibition at Latrobe Regional GalleryBy Latrobe City Council - 2nd June 2005 - Back to News Currently on show at the Latrobe Regional Gallery is ‘John Peart Paintings 1964 – 2004’, a timely exhibition that demonstrates this artist’s position as a major figure in Australian painting. Charting his artistic development over four decades, this exhibition is the first comprehensive survey of Peart’s work.
Gallery Director, Louise Tegart said that John Peart has had a long and distinguished career.
"Peart first came to national prominence through ‘The Field’ exhibition of 1968, at the National Gallery of Victoria. This was the landmark exhibition of Australian abstract art. From that time on, Peart has been committed to abstraction and artistic experimentation," Ms Tegart explained.
"Peart’s work is represented in national, state and regional institutions, along with corporate and private collections. His reputation has been reinforced by the numerous art awards and grants received over the years," Ms Tegart said.
Ms Tegart added that the exhibition featured works from every stage of Peart’s career, from the early colourfield works of the 1960s to his most recent work which reflected his continuing passion for experimentation.
"His commitment to pushing beyond what is predictable and easily accessible continues to enliven his work, ensuring that he remains one of this country’s most exciting painters," Ms Tegart concluded.
‘John Peart Paintings 1964 – 2004’ is a Campbelltown Arts Centre travelling exhibition. This exhibition is supported by Campbelltown City Council, Visions Australia, New South Wales Ministry for the Arts and the Gordon Darling Foundation.
The exhibition continues at the Latrobe Regional Gallery until Sunday 3 July 2005.
