Middlemiss Welcomes MinisterALP Candidate for Morwell, Graeme Middlemiss, will welcome Regional Development Minister, Jacinta Allan, to the Latrobe Valley again this week. By Tim Delany - 19th October 2010 - Back to News ALP Candidate for Morwell, Graeme Middlemiss, will welcome Regional Development Minister, Jacinta Allan, to the Latrobe Valley again this week.
Minister Allan will announce further funding commitments to support the transition to lower carbon electricity generation as part of the Latrobe Valley Advantage Fund.
Mr Middlemiss has asked the Minister’s Office to ensure that there are dedicated officers employed to support industry and workers to make the best decisions.
"We want to see Gippsland workers and their families looked after. This means ensuring that if jobs go, there are people actively supporting workers to find related work in our region. This could include managing transition to other new and growing medium size enterprises like Gippsland Aeronautics"
Mr Middlemiss said the Gippsland Trades and Labour Council and Latrobe City could provide this support in the form of dedicated officer positions, if funded by the State Government.
Mr Middlemiss has also been negotiating with the Minister to ensure the training needs of workers are met.
"There should be immediate, high quality training opportunities for any worker that loses their job as a result of industry transformation", Mr Middlemiss said.
Mr Middlemiss reiterated that the Latrobe Valley Advantage Fund set up by the Brumby Labor Government is just a start of the support process.
"If elected I’ll be using my vote in Parliament to ensure the Valley doesn’t get the same raw deal that the Nationals and Liberals delivered when they privatised"
