By Department of Primary Industries - 19th March 2009 - Back to News

26 March to Sunday, 29 March 2009.

Under difficult seasonal conditions, many farmers and small landholders will have issues and questions on how to re-establish pastures and crops, and manage their animals.

In the areas of pasture management, questions arising might be whether pasture will recover or is if it worth re-seeding? What will happen with weeds? What are the soil erosion risks and what are some cost effective options for managing all these things?

Other questions might be in the area of feed planning and water eg stock water risks. DPI staff will be able to advise you on feed and water management plans including auditing and budgeting.

DPI will also be showcasing its new commercialised Ellinbank Automated Pasture Reader (APR) and visitors to the display can test the APR and find out how it can help to maximise pasture utilisation in a low milk price environment.

Rural landholders who are new to the land or are dealing with the aftermath of fire can drop in and find out how to manage wild dogs, build fencing, identify State Prohibited Weeds, get tips on safe chemical use, and learn about various support programs available.

Animal health staff will be available to provide advice on animal health issues that may be encountered eg mastitis in stock containment areas.

DPI is also seeking farmers to participate in its Scouring Dairy Heifer research project. Free drench resistance testing and diagnosis of common causes of diarrhoea will be made available to eligible farmers and expressions of interest can be lodged at the DPI display in the Baw Baw Pavilion – Site 17.
