Churchill 40Th Anniversary Project To Be Unveiled SaturdayA series of six display panels depicting the history of Churchill will be unveiled to the public at an evening event, this Saturday 12 November starting at 7pm, in the Student Union lounge at Monash University. By Latrobe City Council - 14th November 2005 - Back to News The Churchill and wider community is invited to attend the formal unveiling. Students from Kurnai College will provide musical entertainment.
Latrobe City’s Chief Executive Officer, Paul Buckley, said that the Churchill District Community Association (CDCA) and Latrobe City Council had commissioned the Centre for Gippsland Studies to design and produce the display panels to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Churchill, and recognise Churchill’s contribution to the Latrobe Valley.
"The panels highlight the history of the area prior to and since the Churchill town was created, with scenes from pre European settlement days through to contemporary times," Mr Buckley said.
"CDCA also funded Churchill Primary School to produce a further set of six panels, painted by students, on the same historical topics. These will also be publicly displayed for the first time on Saturday," Mr Buckley revealed.
"The panels will ‘tour’ sites around the district after their unveiling, before a permanent home is decided upon."
The evening event will also feature a number of historical photographic displays from local organisations, which should be of interest to residents and prompt a few recollections. A souvenir booklet will also be available on the day, at no cost.
President of the Churchill District Community Association, Margaret Guthrie, thanked all those who have given their time, their memories and their photographs to complete the project, which will be a permanent record of Churchill’s development.
"Many thanks also to Monash University, Latrobe City Council and the Department for Human Services for providing the project funding," Ms Guthrie said.
Earlier on Saturday, an informal preview will take place from 2pm-3.30pm in the courtyard of the new Gippsland Education Precinct in Northways Rd.
"Visitors will also be able to view first hand some parts of the new Education Precinct, and primary school children will be performing as part of the afternoon celebration," Ms Guthrie said.
Ms Guthrie said that to round off Churchill’s 40th anniversary celebrations, the CDCA will be hosting a community Christmas market and celebration on Saturday 3 December in the West Place courtyard at the Churchill shopping centre.
"There will be stalls, displays and activities, free entertainment, including songs and Christmas carols from local children, and a sausage sizzle," Ms Guthrie said.
"Entry will be by a gold coin donation, to kick off community fundraising efforts towards the Churchill Community Hub," Ms Guthrie added.
To book a stall or participate in the event, contact the Secretary on 5122 3602, or write to the CDCA at PO Box 191, Churchill 3842.
