Latrobe’s Summer Reading Club is ‘too cool’By Latrobe Shire Council - 13th December 2004 - Back to News The Victorian public libraries initiative, ‘Reading Rulz’ Summer Reading Club, has commenced at Latrobe City libraries, engaging young people of all ages in reading and book discussions, and involving a range of free activities designed to expand reading capabilities.
Jeanette Moore, Acting Citizen Services Coordinator, said that the Summer Reading Club initiative has the support of children’s author and creator of the popular ‘Too Cool’ children’s book series, Phil Kettle.
"Phil has featured on the posters, stickers and bookmarks that have been issued to promote the ‘Reading Rulz’ Summer Reading Club. It sends the message to young people that they are never ‘too cool’ to escape into a fictional world created by their favourite author, especially during the summer holidays," Ms Moore said.
"The ‘Reading Rulz’ Summer Reading Club is a great way for parents to foster a love of reading in their children, which will definitely reap the rewards in the future. A family that reads together often provides the strongest role model for future reading enthusiasts, and children who read for pleasure often demonstrate strong reading skills throughout their schooling.
"If any young people are interested in the Summer Reading Club, all that is needed to participate is a library card, an interest in reading and a keen sense of adventure. Not only will the program help to develop their love of reading, but it’s also a great way to meet other young people over the summer holidays who are interested in reading too, and there will also be many opportunities to win lots of great prizes," Ms Moore said.
Young people can also participate in the ‘Reading Rulz’ Summer Reading Club online at www.connectqld.org.au/readingrulz. Online participants can publish their own writing and art work; chat about reading and writing with other young people; and play games.
The ‘Reading Rulz’ Summer Reading Club has already commenced at Latrobe City Libraries in Traralgon, Morwell and Moe, and will continue throughout the school summer holidays, ending on Friday 28 January 2005.
