Liberals To Protect Elderly Country Victorians

Elderly people living in country Victoria will be protected from abuse and neglect under a Liberal Government.

By Phillip Davis - 24th April 2006 - Back to News

Shadow Minister for Country Victoria Philip Davis said elder abuse affected many thousands of elderly Australians each year, but it often went unrecognised.

This is a particularly important issue for country Victoria, with many thousands of elderly people living outside Melbourne in aged care facilities or in the care of others.

"The Liberal Party has developed some clear proposals to help combat the serious and growing problem of elder abuse," Mr Davis said.

"A Liberal Government will establish an Adult Protective Services Unit (APSU).

"To be based on the model of the Victorian Child Protection Service, the APSU will operate within the Department of Human Services.

"The role of the APSU will be to identify and monitor the extent of elder abuse, educating the community about the issue and investigating reports of abuse."

Mr Davis said the methods of reporting elder abuse would also be reviewed.

"A Liberal Government will establish a toll-free 24-hour helpline for reporting elder abuse," Mr Davis said.

"Consultation will also take place to investigate whether certain professionals should be subject to mandatory reporting laws.

"Outcomes, benefits and shortfalls of the current process of mandatory reporting of child abuse will be taken into account."

The Liberal Party is committed to improving the quality of life for the elderly living in country Victoria.
